Miki, a Hillsborough native, has a dream that all queer youth will feel accepted, safe, valued, and loved. Delta Youth is the realization of several years of passionate dreaming and the need to make a difference in the lives of those around her. Miki’s background in interpersonal violence prevention, preschool teaching, direct support services, and education have enabled her drive to enact real change for queer youth in Alamance, Durham, and Orange Counties.

On a hot summer's day in July of 2016, Miki and Hayna met on the lawn at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro. The conversation meandered through topics like social work, self care, social justice, eventually landing on Miki and Hayna's similar interests around queerness. After several more (meandering) conversations, they held the inaugural Delta Youth planning meeting on July 30, 2016.
Miki and Hayna's mutual love of symbolic metaphors, similes, and analogies was a significant factor in naming the organzation. A delta is not only a symbol for change but also refers to the point where two or more bodies of water meet. Miki and Hayna went with "Delta Youth" over the original name "Home Base" because they didn't want to deal with baseball puns until the end of time.
The mission of Delta Youth is to improve the lives of queer youth in Alamance, Durham, and Orange counties by increasing physical and emotional health outcomes; building individual financial and educational capacity; creating awareness and visibility within the community; and empowering youth to unapologetically exist in the world.
